Padstow to Plymouth run for cancer | | Date Added: July 20, 2009 09:29:33 AM | PRESS RELEASEA long run round land’s end for cancer charities Worcestershire woman Cathie Eberlin will soon set off on a challenging 240 mile coastal run to raise money for cancer charities.Cathie, from Abberley, will be starting the run from Padstow, on the north Cornish coast, hoping to reach Plymouth within 2 weeks. She will cover about 240 hilly miles along the south west coastal path and plans to cover 20 miles each day with a couple of rest days.Cathie lost her own mother through breast cancer and has taken on this personal challenge to raise money for St. Richard’s Hospice in Worcester and CLIC Sargent, both charities helping cancer patients and their families. Cathie also wants to raise the profile of the help needed to support cancer patients in their younger years, who are knocked sideways with cancer when trying to cope with the needs of their own children and families.Cathie has done various long distance races since having her own children but is 45 this year so says running a marathon every day will be a big challenge for her. Cathie added, "fighting cancer is a long distance endurance event itself- so doing this challenge fits raising money for cancer- you just can’t give up! The views of the coastline will also be spectacular and inspiring to keep me going."An experienced runner, Cathie has taken part in mountain races in New Zealand including the Coast-to-Coast race across the south island and Kepler challenge which is a 67km mountain challenge. She will be supported by her running friend Jules Kramer, from Stockton on Teme for the first two days and then by her husband Mike and three children. For the final few days to Plymouth she is planning to run unsupported – Cathie sees the second week as the biggest challenge as her body will definitely want to stop so eating and drinking enough will be important. The family plan to camp around the Cornish peninsula and Cathie will stay in B&B’s when on her own to keep the equipment weight down. Cathie explained, "I want to support St. Richard’s as it is a local charity that friends have used and provides all the alternative therapies that become such a lifeline for cancer sufferers . I know from my Mum’s own experience: Preston Cancer Care helped her to cope mentally with the disease - care which sometimes family members cannot give. Similarly CLIC focuses on children’s cancer and helps in the same way but it’s even harder for a family to cope with cancer in their child. Whilst the NHS medical care is top class these additional services rely on voluntary donations."If you would like to support Cathie in her adventurous challenge for cancer please go to www.justgiving.com/cathieeberlin for donation pages for St.Richard’s and /cathieeberlin1 for CLIC.Ends |
